Luang Prabang

After the Gibbon Experience, we took a long, bumpy bus ride down to Luang Prabang. After a whirlaind tour of Northen Thailand, and into Laos, it was nice to be able to relax a bit. The first night, we went out, had some drinks, and found a late night bowling alley. These are my fellow travellers, drunk, and hanging off the back of a Tuk-Tuk cab.More Funny Pictures

The next day we found a place that served real hamburgers!!! We had them for breakfast because we just couldn't resist. Its not easy to find decent American food in Southeast Asia, but this was delicious. Afterwards, we went off to this amazing waterfall with beaustiful pools underneath it for jumping in and swimming. I almost knocked my tooth out on the rope swing, but it was worth it.

THE GIBBON EXPERIENCE!!!!

This is by far one of the most amazing things I have ever done. The Gibbon Project was created to protect the jungle from burning, cutting, and poachers.

They built five treehousest to accomadate guests, along with a network of long, high zipline cables, for travelling in the trees. Look at how high the treehouse is!! There is also a long hike to a beautiful waterfall and swimming hole. All the proceeds from the experience go towards jungle protection and preservation. When we got to the meeting grounds, they were in possessopn of two playful monkeys and a newborn baby bear, both which they apprehended from poachers. It was pretty cool. Check out my pictures and videos, because they are worth it.

Road Trip Day 4 and crossing the boarder

I woke up early and caught a great sunrise in Mae Salong. Allan and I drank some tea that was quite poor. We then decided it was time to head out. We didn't accomplish too much. We dropped the truck off in Chiang Rae, which was a sad moment, and then continued via bus to the Laos border.

We woke up the next day and had the adventure of crossing the border over the Mekong River. From here, most people decide to take the Slow Boat, a two day cramped ride, down to Luang Prabang. We decided to do the Gibbon experience instead. Then we found out there was a two week wait period to get in. We stayed one night, with the intention of going North the next day. As luck would have it, there was a cancellation, and the next day we were off to see the Gibbons, a type of monkey in the Bokeo Nature Preserve.

Road Trip Day 3 - Into Mae Salong

We continued on our road trip to the north. We took turns sitting in the back of the truck, which probably wan't the safest idea, but it sure was fun.

All road trip we saw crazy stuff. There were cows that blocked the roads. Here, an entire section of the road had just completely fallen out and we drove around it. We ended up in Mae Salong. This was probably the prettiest drive and the best sunset we saw. Mae Salong is more influenced by the Chinese than Thai, and you could see it in the people. It was a great place for the final night of our roadtrip.

Road Trip Day 2 - Caves of Sappong

The second day of our road trip was spectacular. We started off by opffroading it to the Long Neck Village. The women have large brass rings around there necks that compress their collar bones to make their necks look longer. Many of them have had these rings on for over 30 years!

We got a lucky tip from a traveller that Allan had met a few weeks back. He told tales of a crazy cave in which 50,000 birds lived and migrated into every night at dusk. We took the guided tour through the cave, and sure enough, at dusk 50,000 birds flew into the cave over the course of about 30 minutes(Video coming soon). It was amazing. We then stayed that night at the Cave Lodge, about a 5 minute walk away. This place was an experience in itself.

Road Trip Day 1 - Mae Hon Song

The first Day of the Road Trip took us through Doi Inthanon National Park. We took a two hour hike along the highest Peak in Thaliand(known as Doi Inthanon), and continued on to Mae Hong Son.

Allan and I navigating the maps, even though there was only one road. Look at how sweet our truck is.

Ching Mai Day 2

The next day in Ching Mai is where the trip started to get really interesting. First I went and saw the temple at Doi Suthep, which was really nice. It would also be my last temple visit in Thailand.

Next, I did a Monk Chat. You sit down with a Monk and ask him whatever you want. His name was Saneh. He was impressed with me, and gave me a copy of his book, which he signed.

That night I met up with another American, Davy, and a Brit named Allan. We decided to go on a crazy road trip through the less travelled mountains of Northern Thailand. We rented a truck and took off(Pictures to come soon).

Chiang Mai

I took the overnite train up to Ching Mai. It was great. The train had tables and chairs that folded into sleeper beds. It was really cool, and it was a great way to trade a night at a hostel for a ngiht in the train. and not have to waste a day travelling the whole time.

Bangkok

I arrived in Bangkok and spent two days there. Really not that cool of a city. About the only thing to see is the grand palace. Pictures of the palace will be updated in a few days. From there it was off to Chiang Mai.
